About Ski Hut Marine

Thank you for looking at us for your water sport needs.

Here is a little history about us. Our business started from a strong passion for the sport of water skiing. Jerry started skiing at the age of 8 behind his families wooden 16' Cruiser boat powered by a 30hp Evinrude. Most teenagers think about their first car when they turn 16 and get their drivers license. Not Jerry, he bought his first boat, a 15' Starcraft with a 65hp Mercury from the Camlek Brothers in Crivitz. He taught himself how to barefoot at the of age 16.

In 1974, he joined the Crivitz Ski Cats show team and became very active in show skiing. During his time with the ski club he taught himself how to backwards barefoot. He was the first club member to ever do this. With his time with the ski club he served as show director, president, and was on the advisors board. He was show director the first time the Ski Cats ever performed at the state tournament.

In 1988, he had an idea about making a ski wider and more user friendly for the show ski acts. He met with Bill Runge, the plant manager, of Wellington Leisure Products in Crivitz (formerly the Thompson Ski Factory). With Bill's help, the Taperflex show ski was started.

In 1989, Jerry had a conversation with Skip Gilkerson about a shoe ski idea that he had. Again to make it wider and more user friendly, thus the wider blank shoe ski came about. Jerry and his partner traveled the show ski circuit selling this product. In 1990 they opened a pro shop in Crivitz. Unfortunately, in 1992 that partnership dissolved.

Some of Jerry's family became investors at this time, and thats when The Ski Hut Marine name became official. In 1995 the new store was built, and he took on a boat, Ski Brendella, and motor, Nissan/Tohatsu, manufacturer. From the years 1995-1997, Wellington started to see business decline, and closed their doors.

In the meantime, Jerry had become good friends with Herb O'Brein. They had a long  conversation at IMTEC back in 1997, and Herb agreed to make the show ski, that Wellington was making, out of fiberglass. Herb added some rocker to the ski to make it perform even better. Unexectedly, Herb made The Ski Hut Marine the exclusive dealer for the ski, and it is still that way to this day.

Jerry's father Les ran the store until 2004, when Jerry finally hung up his corporate job and dedicated himself to The Ski Hut 100 percent. For the next couple of years, it was mainly Jerry, Dave (his main technician) and his youngest son Mitch who ran the store.

Business was growing faster then they could handle, in 2012 Jerry's oldest son Ben, a graduate of Madison and licensed engineer, moved home to help him with the daily operations. With his help, The Ski Hut has partnered up with two satillite stores, one in Escanaba, Michigan and one in Spread Eagle,Wisconsin. We have since bought out all the investors and added a huge showroom.

In 2013, Jerry's son-in-law, Dustin, joined the staff. He comes with a very strong back ground in lending and finance.
